Palazzo Donn’Anna beach

Palazzo Donn’Anna is a grand, unfinished palace by the sea in Naples, on the Posillipo coast. Its building started in 1642 but was never finished, giving it a special, romantic look.

Locals in Naples love to go to the beaches near Palazzo Donn’Anna, especially on weekends. It’s a popular place for families and friends to swim, enjoy the sun, and relax by the sea with beautiful views.

Even though you can’t usually go inside the palace, the area around it is full of life, showing how much Neapolitans enjoy spending their free time at this historic and beautiful spot. It’s a place where history meets the joy of the sea.

The palace itself is a set for legends: one of those, recounted by the writer Matilde Serao, involves Donna Anna Carafa, from which the palace take name. During one of her lavish parties, her lover, Gaetano di Casapesenna, kissed her beautiful niece, Mercedes de las Torres, during a play. Overcome with jealousy, Donna Anna was said to have been furious. Shortly after, Mercedes mysteriously disappeared, with rumors suggesting Donna Anna had her locked away in a convent. Gaetano searched for her tirelessly but died in battle, never finding her again. Legend claims that the ghosts of Donna Anna, Mercedes, and Gaetano are trapped in the palace, forever re-enacting their tragic love triangle.
