Tucked away beneath the bustling streets of Naples lies the Catacombe di San Gaudioso, a relatively undiscovered gem offering a fascinating and somewhat eerie glimpse into the city’s past. This ancient burial site, dating back to the 4th century AD, evolved from the tomb of the North African bishop Saint Gaudiosus into a significant early Christian cemetery. Over the centuries, it expanded to house the remains of prominent Neapolitan nobles and religious figures, particularly in the 17th century.
What makes San Gaudioso unique are the intriguing and slightly unsettling artistic expressions found within. Following a plague in 1656, the practice of “draining” and then burying bodies became common. Skulls were often displayed in niches, while the remaining bones were sometimes incorporated into frescoes adorning the walls. These macabre yet artistic depictions, often featuring symbols of death alongside religious imagery, create a truly distinctive atmosphere.
Visiting the Catacombe di San Gaudioso offers a unique and somewhat chilling experience. Descending into the cool, dimly lit chambers, surrounded by ancient tombs and these peculiar skeletal artworks, can evoke a sense of the macabre and the passage of time. While historically a sacred place of rest, the artistic presentation of human remains makes a visit here a truly unforgettable, and for some, a distinctly unsettling or even horror-tinged encounter with Neapolitan history.
The Catacombe di San Gaudioso are nestled in the Rione Sanità, one of Naples' most fascinating neighborhoods, rich in history and local character. Important Note: The entrance to the Catacombe di San Gaudioso is inside the Basilica Santa Maria della Sanità, located in Piazza Sanità, 14.
Walking can be an interesting prospective if you want to also explore the hood and witness the lively atmosphere of Rione Sanità, one of the most authentic Neapolitan quarters.
Take Metro Line 1 or Line 2 to the Museo or Cavour station. From the Museo station, take bus 168, 178, C63, or R4 and get off at the "Basilica Incoronata - Catacombe San Gennaro" stop (the ride takes about 15 minutes). The entrance to San Gaudioso is inside the Basilica Santa Maria della Sanità, which is a short walk from the bus stop. From Cavour station, you can walk to the National Archaeological Museum and take the same buses.
From the city center, you can take bus lines 168, 178, C63, or R4 directly to the "Basilica Incoronata - Catacombe San Gennaro" stop.
Taxi can be a comfortable choice but consider that the traffic in Rione Sanità can be wild!
